Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has questioned Manchester City’s decision to sign another left-footed centre-back Nathan Ake after it emerged City are closing in on the Bournemouth defender.
The Citizens’ defence has struggled a lot, following Vincent Kompany’s quit from the club and Aymeric Laporte’s long-term injury.
And now, as Pep Guardiola is eager to improve the squad, City have reportedly agreed a fee with Bournemouth for the Netherlands international following their relegation to the Championship last week, and the transfer will be completed in the upcoming days.
However, when speaking on club’s transfer decision, Carragher revealed he is not convinced that Ake has the right characteristics to play alongside Laporte.
He wrote on social media: “I like Nathan Ake and I think he will suit Man City. But with Laporte a guaranteed starter I’m not convinced two left-footed centre-backs works?I know right-footed players play together but it never feels right the other way round to me! Left back or a back three? Is Laporte injury prone or he just had a bad injury? There is a difference. If Laporte is fit he plays! I just think it’s interesting to see how Pep gets Ake into the team when Laporte is fit!”
In reaction to Carragher’s view point on Twitter, City fans have expressed their thoughts and opinions by providing some strong responses.

What’s wrong with you! You just want to disagree with everything! Did you think of injuries before typing this post? We suffered last season because our left footed defender was out with no replacement. Its great business and Ake will fit right in and will become better under Pep— Ash (@Ashdiver) July 30, 2020
We’re buying another defender this summer 😂, ake isn’t even meant to be starter.— Humble KDB (@ManchesterBleu) July 30, 2020
I’d argue the opposite, speaking as a left-footed player.Left-footed players are forced to train more with their right foot in drills to match what the rest of the squad is doing.
They are more two-footed than right sided players – many of which can barely use their left.

It’s not like City are one of these middling Prem teams whose ambition is survival and playing no more than 2 cup games a season – they play 55/60 games a season so plenty of rotation— Gareth Edwards (@garethedwards74) July 30, 2020
Jamie, City are buying Koulibaly too, to partner Laporte.— Chris Howard 🏆🏆🏆🏆 (@Chris_G_Howard) July 30, 2020
