Why Pep Guardiola is so keen on summer move for Aston Villa midfielder

Manchester City Pep Guardiola is considering a move for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz just a year after the Brazilian moved to the West Midlands, according to the Birmingham Mail

The 22-year-old joined the Etihad Stadium outfit from Vasco da Gama in the summer of 2017, signing a five-year contract. However, he was immediately loaned to Girona where he spent the whole season.

The UK Home Office denied him a work permit in 2018, prompting Man. City to loan him to the Spanish side again and he featured in 46 games across all competitions over both campaigns.

He later joined Villa for around £15 million after failing to earn a work permit in Manchester last summer.

City want more quality options in the defensive midfield department with Fernandinho approaching the twilight of his career, and reports on Luiz this season have been positive.

According to Bleacher Report, Manchester City may look into bringing Brazilian defensive midfielder Douglas Luiz back from Aston Villa this summer.

Manager Pep Guardiola is open to the idea of a return and was full of praises for the Brazil international last October, claiming “he has the quality to play with us.”

City have a buyback option and could happily exercise it in the coming weeks if need be. it will reportedly cost them up to double the amount they initially received for the player, with the price set at £25 million this summer and £30 million from next season.

A chance to finally play for Man. City could be on the cards, and it will be interesting to see what happens.

Is Douglas Luiz good enough to move back to Man City?

The holding midfielder has been instrumental in City’s success over the past seven years, and a successor to this holding role will no doubt be top of Guardiola’s wishlist when Fernandinho does leave the club.

Luiz forward thinking and neat passing between the lines provided rare glimpses of quality in a game utterly bereft of any class. Not only is he a threat going forward, he is a constant safety net in front of a vulnerable Villa backline.
