Manchester City fans on Twitter have been responding to a comments made by former English professional footballer and Liverpool star Emile Heskey on Fernandinho’s replacement.
The Brazilian has been a key player for Pep Guardiola during the Catalan’s time in charge of the club and has demonstrated his versatility. The Brazilian’s physicality, technical ability and tactical awareness make him the perfect midfielder for Guardiola’s style of football.
However, with Fernandinho now at 35 years, Pep Guardiola will probably be looking at his long-term replacement, and Douglas Luiz could be the one to replace the the former Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder.
The Brazilian midfielder arrived in English football during the summer of 2017. Work permit issues prevented him from making an impact, with loan spells at Girona before offloading him to Villa in a £15 million ($19m) transfer.
The midfielder has impressed since leaving the Etihad Stadium and may yet be lured back to the north west from Aston Villa as the Citizens still have a buyback clause to bring Douglas Luiz back to the club.
Emile Heskey believes that City will be watching Douglas Luiz closely.
“With Fernandinho at that age, [Pep Guardiola] will probably be looking at that. They would definitely be looking at [Douglas Luiz]. He’s really strong as a holding midfielder. We’ve seen it [the potential to replace Fernandinho],” says Heskey in an exclusive interview with HITC.

I always wanted Luiz to stay gutted for the work permit, but maybe its time we resolve that

Is Douglas Luiz good enough to move back to Man City?
The holding midfielder has been instrumental in City’s success over the past seven years, and a successor to this holding role will no doubt be top of Guardiola’s wishlist when Fernandinho does leave the club.
Luiz forward thinking and neat passing between the lines provided rare glimpses of quality in a game utterly bereft of any class. Not only is he a threat going forward, he is a constant safety net in front of a vulnerable Villa backline.
He shares a number of similar attributes with Fernandinho, but as you would expect, he is less developed than the 35-year-old.
If his form at Aston Villa this season is anything to go by, you can expect Manchester City to bring back Douglas Luiz in the summer.
