Manchester City fans as well as Pep Guadiola have been delighted with Ruben Dias’ performance for the Citizens so far this season following his £65m move from Benfica.
Dias became City’s record signing during the summer transfer window after the club’s pursuit of Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly went cold.
Kalidou Koulibaly emerged as the new first choice over the summer but, Napoli’s valuation – said to be over £70million – proved prohibitive. Further options emerged, with Sevilla’s Jules Kounde reportedly considered before focus switched to Dias.
The 23-year-old has slotted in seamlessly to the City back four and has already formed a good understanding with City’s first-choice centre-back Aymeric Laporte.
The impact of Dias partnership with Aymeric Laporte is something the club were missing last season.
A bad injury to Aymeric Laporte last season highlighted City’s shortcomings in the position following the departure of Vincent Kompany, with midfielder Fernandinho operating as a makeshift defender for most of the campaign.
Dias has started every game since he signed for the Blues, including three alongside Aymeric Laporte, in which the Citizens have conceded just three goals.
He is a complete and modern centre-back, who is both strong in defence and comfortable on the ball. He is vocal and clearly a fine reader of the game.
Guardiola believes Dias’ arrival means City now have consistency in their back four which they lacked last season due to a series of injuries.
“They both played really well as well. These guys give us consistency. We struggled a lot last season without two central defenders,” Guardiola told BT Sport.

Cancelo has been phenomenal at LB. He created 5 chances in the first half alone yesterday and was solid on the defensive side as well 🔥

What a signing, saves us City fans from depression. Who would have thought that we can keep back to back clean sheets and protect a 1-0 lead

Remembering how well mangala started, I’m worried I’m putting too much faith in this guy, because he looks fantastic! He’s a great leader too, top head on his shoulders.
