Riyad Mahrez scored a hat-trick as Manchester City returned to winning ways with yet another comprehensive victory over Burnley at the Etihad Stadium.
The Citizens have been inconsistent towards the start of the season, but they were back to their best as they followed up victory in the Champions League in midweek with their first Premier League win in three game
Pep Guardiola’s side started the day in 14th having failed to score more than once in their last six league games, and without a win in their last two.
City took the lead within the opening six minutes with an excellent team move. After pouncing on a mistake from Burnley defender James Tarkowski, they worked the ball to Kevin De Bruyne, who quickly set up Riyad Mahrez who put the finishing touch to the move by finding the net with a left-footed finish.
City doubled their advantage in the 22nd-minute when the visitors were caught napping from Kyle Walker’s throw-in with Mahrez pouncing and curling home his second.
There was then a special moment as Benjamin Mendy registered his first-ever City goal to made it 3-0 in the 41st minute with a sweetly struck volley after a fine cross from De Bruyne.
The goals continued to flow after the break. First Ferran Torres notched up his maiden Premier League goal before Mahez sealed his hat-trick with a fine header.
It could have been 6-0 had an effort from Jesus not been ruled out for offside by VAR and a shot from De Bruyne not crashed against the post.
The win means that for the fourth consecutive time, City recorded a 5-0 home victory over Burnley, a win that moves them up to eighth, three points adrift of the top four, while Burnley remain 17th.
