Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims Pep Guardiola wants to promote Roméo Lavia to the first-team squad next season.

City beat a host of their Premier League rivals to sign the 17-year-old in the summer of 2020, and he has enjoyed a superb first season in England.

He made a huge impression on academy staff having played a key role in the club’s Under-23s winning the Premier League 2 title.

Aged just 16 when he moved to England, many expected Lavia to spend the majority of his first season representing the U18s, but by November he had made his first start for Enzo Maresca’s reserve side and has gone onto be named in the XI for each of their 11 games in 2021.

According to Mike McGrath for The Daily Telegraph, Pep Guardiola wants to promote the Belgium teenager to his first-team squad following Fernandinho agreeing to stay at Manchester City for next season.

The report adds that Man City were tracking the progress of Sassuolo’s Manuel Locatelli, but Juventus are at the front of the queue for him. Roméo Lavia’s progress means they can concentrate on other areas to strengthen.

The Brussels-born midfielder have similar strengths when on the ball, and has spent time this season honing his ability to make line-breaking passes from deep. He is as a potential successor to Fernandinho, who as it stands is set to leave this summer when his contract expires.

The news was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and City Chief, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters.
