Ilkay Gundogan has taken aim at his Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola over the tactics imposed in their Champions League final defeat to Chelsea last month – which have got some of the club’s fans talking.
The Premier Leaque champions were left disappointed in their first ever Champions League final appearance after going down 1-0 to Chelsea in Porto.
And now the 30-year-old has appeared to criticise Pep Guardiola’s tactic against Chelsea while on international duty.
The tactic in question is Guardiola’s lack of a defensive midfielder. One of Fernandinho and Rodri occupied that role for pretty much all of the campaign, but they were both left out of the starting eleven against Chelsea.
Gundogan was selected in midfield alongside Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden. Guardiola’s selection raised eyebrows before kick-off as he essentially included six attacking-minded players.
Speaking about the manager’s tactics in the Champions League final, Gundogan said: “A few days before the final, it became apparent that there is a special idea in the head of the manager.
“I tried to make the best of it. It should not be.”
These Gundogan’s comment on his future has prompt plenty of Sky Blues to react on social media.

The players were ok. But the manager decided to do things upside down.

If we started Fernandinho we would’ve slapped Chelsea because let’s be honest with ourselves: We are a better team than Chelsea.

I knew it. Players looked confused on the pitch. Doubt then knew what the hell they were doing. Guess we now know why half the squad are looking for the exits.

I watched the match and saw how uncomfortable and confused the players were. I never blamed the players for the loss because I understand how difficult it is to go into a match with a completely different system you didn’t practice. Pep has to take responsibility for the loss

I’ll never understand if the players don’t feel comfortable with the idea why don’t they just tell Pep, If we won he’d have been a genius now that we lost the players will complain about him switching it up so annoying

Gundogan finished the domestic season as City’s top scorer in the Premier League with 13 goals.
The midfielder is rumoured to be stalling on a new Manchester City contract amid interest from Barcelona.
