Manchester City make decision on Benjamin Mendy and his potential replacement – reports

Manchester City have ruled out spending on a left-back in the current summer transfer window, according to reports.

Man City haven’t signed a left back since they paid £50 million to Monaco for Benjamin Mendy in 2017, who has mostly been injured and inconsistent during his four years.

A number of injury problems have prevented him from ever establishing himself as a regular under Guardiola. The Frenchman struggled for game time this season over the impressive Joao Cancelo and rejuvenated Oleksandr Zinchenko.

The 26-year-old, who will see his deal at the Etihad expire in 2023, is now reportedly open to leave with the club ready to sell in this summer transfer window.

Sam Lee via The Athletic UK, last month reported that Man City would be open to bringing in a replacement for Mendy, but would not necessarily push the boat out for a player in the £50M-£60M bracket.

According to goal, Mendy won’t be sold this summer even though his future at the Etihad has been uncertain for the longest time after he lost his starting place under Pep Guardiola.

The report stated that a new left-back has been talked about, with Sporting C.P.’s Nuno Mendes heavily linked, but a move is not expected this transfer window.

No clubs have been mentioned as of yet to be interested in the Frenchman, but City could cash in on Mendy and then bring in a replacement ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

Although the option to sign a left-back remains, enough promise has reportedly been shown by both Joao Cancelo and Nathan Ake in the past season to not warrant Manchester City prioritising a new left-back in the summer transfer window.
