Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has sent Lionel Messi a supportive message after his surprising Barcelona departure.
The 33-year-old, who happens to be one of Messi’s closest friends, made the move to Nou Camp after leaving the Etihad as a free agent this summer and was set to link up with his long-time friend.
It has been previously reported that the striker, who won the Copa America 2021 with the former Barca captain earlier this summer, had agreed to take a large pay cut in order to join the Catalans and play with Messi.
The Manchester City’s all-time leading goalscorer even admitted as much when he was officially unveiled as a Barcelona player, insisting that Messi’s presence at the club played a big part in his decision to join the Catalans.
His’s arrival was also claimed to have played a crucial role in Messi agreeing a new deal with Barcelona.
The footballing world was shocked to its core last week when Barcelona announced six-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi was set to leave the club amid financial problems, which means Aguero won’t be playing alongside his friend this season as he wished.
“Of course I hope to play with Lionel. I know him so well, we’re good friends,” Aguero said on the matter upon signing for Barca.
“What happens with Leo is a decision that he and the club will make. It is a pride to play with him. I’ve played with him in the national team.
“All the best in whatever comes my friend,” Aguero wrote.
“And always with that smile. I love you.”
