Pep Guardiola says he will “step aside” from Manchester City if he’s a “problem” for the fans.
After Wednesday’s Champions League win over RB Leipzig, Pep Guardiola said he “would like more people” on Saturday.
“I’d like more people to come on Saturday, we need the people….I invite all our people to come Saturday, 3 pm, to watch the game.”
The unprompted comments by Guardiola were surprising to many, not least to Manchester City supporters who felt it was a needless dig.
Speaking to The Guardian, Kevin Parker of the club’s official supporters’ club claimed Pep doesn’t have any understanding as to the reason there might not be a big crowd on a Wednesday night in the Etihad, and suggested he should stick to coaching.
Speaking at his press conference on Friday, Guardiola responded and says he would never question the loyalty of City fans but added that if he’s a “problem” for them he will “step aside”.
“I am entirely grateful for the support that we had against Leipzig,” he added.
“I always say if guys want to come we will be incredibly grateful because I know how difficult the game will be and I know we need our people.
“I never sit here and ask why people don’t come. If you can’t come then don’t.
“This is a big mistake. We are who we are, we are proud of who we are. I know the history, I’ve learned the history of this club from the lower divisions what it means to travel and follow the club. I respect that.
“I don’t want to be like United, Liverpool, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, like Madrid or like all the big clubs. We are who we are. I like it.
“Don’t put some words in my mouth that I didn’t say. And If I’m a big, big problem… I will never be a problem for my fans, never ever.
“If I’m a problem for my fans I will make a step aside, it’s not a problem for me. But I am one of them. Since day one I tried to do my best, that’s for sure.”
These Guardiola’s comments has prompt Plenty of Sky Blues to react on social media.

Some of our fans are so fickle… And someone ask Kevin Parker to zip it; he’s making this worse. Not that anyone asked him to speak in the first place.
i’ll never understand why some of our fanbase tries so hard to discredit this man. i’d take a push for the ucl while being guaranteed the title every season over winning the ucl once and going trophyless every single season then after, i respect pep for what he’s made us.
