Manchester City are reportedly ‘paying attention’ and have ‘held transfer talks’ with highly-rated PSV Eindhoven wide-man Cody Gakpo, according to new claims from the Netherlands this week..
The Dutchman has been a regular for PSV Eindhoven since being promoted to their first team in the 2018-19 season, making 116 appearances for the club, scoring 31 goals and assisting his teammates on 39 occasions.
He has been in scintillating form this season, scoring an impressive 10 goals and registering a further 11 assists for PSV in the 2021/22 campaign.
Gakpo’s fine form has attracted interest from a number of top European clubs and the latest name linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium.
According to Voetbal International as translated and relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester City are ‘paying attention’ to the performances of in-form PSV winger, Cody Gakpo this season.
The report states that Manchester City, alongside Liverpool, are said to have ‘started the process’ to lure the Dutchman’s signature over a potential summer transfer.
In addition, it is claimed (via the Mirror) that the 22-year-old has ‘spoken’ with both Man City and Liverpool, but he ‘is yet to make his mind up on his immediate future’.
“The clubs that want something are also known to me, I’ve had conversations about that with my agent,” Gakpo said.
“Very interesting clubs have been added, but we have to look at what the first step is. At the moment my focus is not there and I had better things to do on Sunday.”
He has a contract with PSV lasting until 2025, and is expected to sign a new deal soon which would keep him on the club’s books until 2026.
However, with interest from City, Liverpool and Bayern Munich, if one of those clubs were to bid for the 22-year-old, it would be hard for him to turn it down.
A physically imposing winger yet one who dribbles with grace and elegance, Gakpo could be the next Dutch talent to take his talents to the Premier League and become a superstar in England.
