Manchester progressed to the semi-finals of the Champions League on Wednesday, following a 1-0 aggregate win over Atletico Madrid.

The second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano ended 0-0, but it was marred by some unsavoury scenes from the home players in the latter stages.

It was a first half where Atletico were much more positive than in the first leg, and pressed City higher up the pitch.

However, the visitors still created the better chances, with Ilkay Gundogan shooting wide, while John Stones headed over from a corner.

Midway through the half, Ilkay Gundogan hit the post with a side-footed effort inside the box, not long before Geoffrey Kondogbia forced a save out of Ederson, in Atletico’s first shot across two legs.

City ended the stronger in the opening 45, with Joao Cancelo and Riyad Mahrez failing to test Jan Oblak through half chances.

But that changed after the break as City faced an Atletico onslaught in the second period.

Antoine Griezmann and Thomas Lemar both had shots blocked in the opening minutes, while Joao Felix headed over inside the City box.

Soon after, Griezmann sliced wide from the edge of the box, while substitute Rodrigo De Paul curled wide twice. Correa shot wide.

The chances kept coming for Atletico as John Stones blocked Angel Correa’s shot, while Stefan Savic couldn’t quite get a toe to the ball in the box as the ball ran through in a goalmouth scramble.

Felipe then was sent off in injury-time after picking up a second yellow card for a kick on Phil Foden that sparked a melee involving players from both teams.

Gundogan had a very late chance which was saved by Oblak, while Atletico’s final opportunity of the game came via Yannick Carrasco’s shot which was punched wide.

Taking to Twitter, Manchester City fans celebrated their hard-fought yet thrilling win over Atletico Madrid.
