‘Good replacement if Pep leaves’ – Many Man City Fans react after hearing who is on the shortlist to succeed Guardiola

Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou is on the shortlist to replace Pep Guardiola at the Etihad.

The Australian was part of the City Football Group when managing Yokohama F Marinos in Japan, where he won the J League in 2019.

He was a surprise appointment at Parkhead last summer after a deal to replace Neil Lennon with Eddie Howe collapsed following protracted negotiations.

Despite a sticky start, the Hoops have established a new identity under Postecoglou, and are on course to wrestle the Premiership title back from Rangers after Sunday’s victory at Ibrox.

According to New York Times journalist Rory Smith, via Fox Sports, Man City have been closely monitoring Postecoglou since 2018, when the 56-year-old took charge of Japanese side Yokohama F. Marinos.

Postecoglou is ‘really rated’ by City’s hierarchy, and while Smith claims that is it “not impossible” to see the Australian replace Guardiola, he believes a potential move from Celtic to the Etihad Stadium is highly unlikely, given his lack of Champions League experience.

“Ange Postecoglou is not going to get the Man City job, but there are a lot of people at City who really rate him,” Smith told BBC Radio 5 Live, via Fox Sports.

“That actually says all you need to know about how well regarded he is within coaching circles. He worked for Yokohama Marinos which is the City Football Group team in the J-League.

“They think he’s really, really good. I’d be staggered if Pep (Guardiola) left in the summer or next summer if they gave it to Postecoglou, but there are people there who will tell you he’s a really gifted manager.

“I’m not saying it’s impossible (that Postecoglou would replace Guardiola), but it would be surprising.”

Pep Guardiola is contracted at the Etihad Stadium until 2023 and could extend that, but expects to work elsewhere at some point in the future. It remains to be seen what the future holds for Guardiola and City, having previously led Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

The news of Ange Postecoglou as a potential replacement for Guardiola was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from Man City supporters.

“That’s great. Almost plays the same way Pep does as well. Inverted Full backs, high 8s and wide wingers in a 2-3-5. No wonder he was part of the CFG with Yokohama Marinos.
Also, many don’t talk about the managers CFG/City have produced. Arteta, Vieira, Bronckhorst and this guy.”

“Why is everyone here so toxic about it. I doubt any of you have seen him coach, he’s revolutionised that Celtic team.”
