‘Was absolutely sublime’, ‘deserves more respect’ – Many Man City fans laud ace after his ‘Best game’ yet for club

Manchester City fans have been hailing Nathan Ake following his performance against Burnley, helping Pep Guardiola’s side to go back at the top of the table.

Manchester City momentarily lost their spot at the top of the Premier League table following Liverpool’s victory against Watford. However, it only took them five minutes on the pitch against Burnley to regain that place.

Kevin de Bruyne opened Manchester City’s scoring in the 5th minute while Ilkay Gundogan doubled their advantage 20 minutes later.

Burnley’s introduction of Maxwell Cornet in the 2nd half gave them a few glimpses on goal – most notably a header poked beyond Ederson but cleared off the line by Nathan Ake.

Nathan in particular enjoyed an unpopular afternoon in front of the Turf Moor faithful. The Dutch defender remains behind Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte and John Stones in the centre-back pecking order but all members of the squad are needed to win multiple trophies – particularly given Dias is still out injured.

Nathan had a real physical battle on his hands and isn’t the kind of centre-back Pep would usually deploy against Burnley but he did well regardless.

Had a fairly comfortable evening despite having to deal with the presence of Weghorst. Cleared the ball off the goal line in the 2nd half after Maxwell Cornet had beaten Ederson.

It would be a surprise to see Ake start against Atletico or Liverpool but he may still be needed either in case of injury or to see a result out.

Man City fans, then, were all over Twitter praising Ake for his display. Here’s what some of them had to say on Twitter…

“I would start Nathan Ake against Athletico Madrid, cause against a defensive, we might just have to rely on set-pieces, and Ake is probably our best header of the ball, alongside Laporte.
So, Ake at LB, Stones and Laporte as centre-halves with Walker/Cancelo at RB.”

Nathan Ake is a good defender. Because we don’t see him a lot, people automatically think he’s sh*t. Today he was crucial in stopping Burnley get a goal back before the end to make it nervy. He deserves more respect ”

“I honestly don’t think he’s had a bad game since he’s joined? I’d be gutted if he went, I think he has a lot more to offer. Someone’ll be signing a really good defender, unfortunately.”
