Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims Vincent Kompany is now the clear first choice at Burnley for the managerial position.
Burnley’s focus this week is on retaining their Premier League status but the Clarets are continuing to hunt for a new manager.
Mike Jackson is in interim charge and will see out the final two matches of the campaign as Burnley visit Aston Villa on Thursday before a season finale against Newcastle United at Turf Moor on Sunday. The Clarets enter those fixtures in the bottom three, a point behind Leeds United with a game in hand and two adrift of Everton.
Burnley axed Sean Dyche on Good Friday and have been linked with a host of names since, with chairman Alan Pace keen to take his time to find the right replacement in what will be a key appointment for the club.
Former Man City hero Vincent Kompany and Portuguese former footballer Carlos Carvalhal are understood to be the names under consideration.
According to journalist Alan Nixon, Kompany has emerged as the preferred managerial choice for Burnley but they need to survive in the Premier League in order to tempt him into moving to Turf Moor.
Kompany has another offer on his table from Bundesliga club Wolfsburg, but Burnley would become more attractive to him if they are still in the Premier League next season.
The 36-year-old has recorded 40 victories and just 17 defeats from 87 matches in charge, posting fourth and third-placed finishes in the league and reaching the domestic cup final, only to lose out to Gent on penalties.
Although Kompany still has two years remaining on his contract, his return to English football could suit all parties, but a decision may not be made by Burnley until their status ahead of 2022-23 is known.
The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from Man City supporters.
