Manchester City have been handed a fine by UEFA due to the ‘improper conduct’ of their players during the Champions League quarter-final second-leg against Atletico Madrid.
Pep Guardiola’s side progressed to the semi-final of the competition after a goalless second leg tie at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.
Atletico defender Felipe was sent-off for a foul on City’s Phil Foden, which led to confrontation between both sets of players and coaching
During the altercation, Atletico centre-back and former City man Stefan Savic appeared to pull Jack Grealish’s hair. Following this, he chased the England international up the tunnel in order to confront the ex-Aston Villa man.
Savic attempted to drag Foden off the pitch after the Englishman was fouled on the touchline. He also appeared to steer his head towards City substitute Raheem Sterling.
After a meeting of UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on May 2nd, a decision has been made on the sanctions and punishments to be received by either Manchester City or Atletico Madrid.
According to an official statement, Manchester City will now be subject to a fine of €14,000 for the ‘improper conduct’ of Pep Guardiola’s team during the clash with Atletico Madrid on April 13th 2022.
As per James Ducker of the Telegraph, UEFA fine relates to the five bookings they received in the game, and so is an automatic fine based on the rules.
However the most shocking decision is that it is also confirmed within the UEFA document that Atletico Madrid will be subject to no fine or sanction.
The news was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.

“Absolutely ridiculous. Our players did nothing but get fouled and tackled and pushed and pulled by Atletico. If anything our players defended themselves.”

“Atletico players deliberately kicked Phil Foden and responded to Jack Grealish’s verbal shot by pulling his hair. Now, Man City have to pay the fine for ‘improper’ behavior .”
