‘It up to Pep to decide’, ‘Stick him on the left’ – Man City fans react as Phil Foden eyes major position change next season

Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims Phil Foden would like to operate on the right-hand side of a front three in the 2022/23 season.

The 21-year-old has been a key player for the Citizens during the 2021-22 campaign, making 40 appearances in all competitions, contributing 13 goals and nine assists in the process.

Foden is the crown jewel of the Manchester City academy and with it he has been making it known how proud he is to see the successes of it and more.

While Foden operated across the frontline in the following season, that saw him voted as the PFA Young Player of the Year, it seems as if he may have his eyes on a different role next term.

According to a report by Sam Lee of the Athletic, sources close to Phil Foden have suggested that he would like to operate on the right-hand side of a front three in the 2022/23 season.

Despite enjoying much of his success as a left-winger, it is worth noting that Foden will however have yet more competition for the attacking positions under Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City officials have of course secured the signing of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, likely meaning Foden will not be required in the false-nine role.

Julian Alvarez is also set to take up a multitude of roles across the forward line, following his move from River Plate this summer.

The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.

“Possibly next to KDB. Depends on what happens with Bernardo. Otherwise I’d play him on the right to let him cut in. I’d start Sterling as well and his runs would creat havoc and space for Haaland. Very similar to how we played with Aguero..”
