Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims the club feels Romeo Lavia is not quite ready to step up and compete with Rodri for first-team minutes.

Lavia was spotted as a youngster playing in the KDB Cup in Belgium, and the Blues swooped to sign him up for their academy from Anderlecht — disappointing the Belgian club, who were hoping he would continue with them.

The 18-year-old has impressed in his two years at the City Football Academy, and played in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup last season for City, as well as training regularly with the first team.

The Belgian midfielder is extremely highly-rated at the club, and has often been likened to City captain Fernandinho. Many fans were expecting the teenager to be used more next season, given the departure of Fernandinho, as a backup for Rodri.

But according to Phil Hay & Sam Lee of The Athletic, the feeling at Man City is that Romeo Lavia is not quite ready to step up and compete with Rodri for first-team minutes.

They report that Manchester City, who have been heavily linked with a move to for midfielder Kalvin Phillips, are ‘confident’ the England international will push to leave Leeds in £50m deal.

The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.

“Everyone is convinced he’s a massive talent, but it’s clear Pep doesn’t trust him yet. Would be a shame if we lose him but holding mid is one of the positions where experience and maturity is the most important.”
