Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims Pep Guardiola’s side are interested in signing Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt in the summer transfer window.

In 2019, the £63m-rated defender joined Juventus for an initial fee of €75m (£67.8m), making him the most expensive defender in Italian top-flight history.

Since then, the player – who described himself as feeling “invincible” in the Eredivisie – has now made as many appearances for his current club as he did for Ajax.

The Dutchman is currently being linked with a move away from the Italian giants, with Juventus reportedly keen on cutting De Ligt’s salary from €12m (£10.2) to €7.5m (£6.3m) per year.

With the 22-year-old unwilling to take a pay cut, a number of Premier League clubs have begun to show an interest in the centre-back.

Manchester United and Liverpool are looking at De Ligt, while Chelsea have added the Netherlands international to a list of potential defensive targets.

Those three Premier League clubs could face further competition for De Ligt, with the Mirror reporting that Manchester City have joined the race for the Juventus player.

The report states that Pep Guardiola is keen on signing the former Ajax defender, who has two years left to run on his current deal with Juventus.

The report was shared on Twitter and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.

“No we’re not, he’s clearly using us as a threat to Juve over the contract dispute”

“We should go for frenkie and not waste money on another cb. How will be able to give game time to 5 good cb’s. In case of injury concerns we should get a younger cb who has potential to develop.”

“This guy is a brilliant defender and he’s only 22.”

“A lot of CB chatter. Can’t see us bringing anyone in unless someone goes out. We know Ruben and John aren’t going anywhere and both Ake and Laporte have publicly mentioned that they will be back next season.”

“These rumors about the arrival of a new defender only make sense if Laporte or Stones leave the club. We cannot end up with 04 high-level central defenders knowing that we cannot all offer them playing time.”

“I like rumors about defenders but we all know that none of our defenders will be sold..”
