Pep Guardiola imminent new signing says that Sergio Gomez will compete for a place in the Manchester City first team when he signs from Anderlecht.
City agreed an £11m (€13m) deal with Anderlecht to sign Sergio Gomez on Thursday, with the 21-year-old due to undergo a medical and complete the move in the next 24-48 hours.
It was initially thought Gomez would have been loaned out once the transfer was completed, but City boss Guardiola confirmed he will stay in Manchester this season.
Speaking on Friday, ahead of Manchester City’s Premier League clash with newly promoted Bournemouth, Pep Guardiola revealed that the 21 year-old would remain with the Sky Blues, despite talk of possibly being sent out on loan.
“The club is always working on many possibilities in many positions,” the manager said. “This one target is a young player, in the Under-17 World Cup years ago the best player was Foden and he (Gomez) was the second best player.
“He played for Spain Under-21s, a young talented player from the Barcelona academy, went to Dortmund but didn’t have many minutes and in the last year played in good hands under [Vincent] Kompany [at Anderlecht]. He played well, we targeted him to bring him here.
“He’s for now, he will stay with us, the squad, alongside Joao [Cancelo], Josh [Wilson-Esbrand] and him for the left-backs, he’ll stay with us.”
The news was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
