‘Truly a strange decision’ – Many fans react as Sergio Aguero slams Man City for selling Raheem Sterling

Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has hit out at the Premier League club’s decision to sell Raheem Sterling to Chelsea this summer.

The Premier League champions were open to keeping Sterling and had previously sought to tie him down to a new deal, but the player had decided he wanted a new challenge after failing to get the game time that he wanted during his final 18 months under Guardiola.

Pep Guardiola’s side finally allowed Sterling to leave after entering the final 12 months of his contract when Premier League rivals Chelsea came in with a £47.5m bid.

Sterling provided 13 goals and five assists in 30 Premier League appearances last campaign with the England international hitting 131 goals in 339 matches in his time at Man City.

Aguero – who retired last season on advice from doctors after being diagnosed with a cardiac arrhythmia – played with Sterling for six of those seasons, and in a discussion about strikers old and new at the Etihad he criticised the logic behind one of the most high-profile deals of the summer.

The former marksman thinks Man City could be making a mistake by selling former team-mate Sterling.

Speaking on his Twitch channel, Aguero said: “I don’t understand the sale of Sterling. There are times they (City) make strange decisions.”

These Aguero’s comments were shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.

“He’s definitely right about the strange decisions. You know it’s bad when the club’s arguably best ever player is coming out saying that 😭.”

“Can’t lie especially with the acquisition of Haaland it does make less sense. I imagine the 2 of them would have cooked.”

“Raheem wanted to leave because of game time, we aren’t the type to make a player stay. Plus he had one dead one his contract so he would’ve left for free since he didn’t want to sign a new contract.”

“Then serg doesn’t get it, Pep didn’t guarantee game time which Raz wanted so Raz decided to leave, so we had to cos pep doesn’t want unhappy players at the club.”

“We tried to get him to sign, he refused, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. His non attendance at the victory parade said without words, exactly what his feelings & intentions were. I won’t wish him luck because he is at a rival club, but I wish him well.”

“He’s not been catastrophic. Raz scored 13 EPL goals last season, which was the 2nd most last season behind kev (15), so if last season was catastrophic for Sterling, I’d really wanna see what a good season for him is.”
