Fabrizio Romano reveals why Cucurella didn’t join Man City this summer

Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella joined the club from Brighton this summer, but Manchester City were also keen on signing the left-back.

Marc Cucurella was heavily linked with a move to Manchester City this summer and he even handed in a transfer request to force through a move.

The Spaniard had a very impressive season with the Seagulls and with City selling Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal, it meant they were light on left-backs.

However, Man City had multiple bids rejected by Brighton and it opened the door for Chelsea to get the deal done. Instead, Man City signed talented Anderlecht star Sergio Gomez to come in at left-back.

Some people questioned why the Spaniard did not join Manchester City, but Fabrizio Romano has now revealed the reason a move up north never materialised.

Romano claims that Brighton were keen to involve Julian Alvarez on loan as part of the deal to take Cucurella to Manchester City, but Pep Guardiola insisted Alvarez was staying with the first team, with over ten approaches turned down for the attacker.

Pep Guardiola had revealed why his side did not choose to sign the former Brighton left-back and no deal involving Alvarez was mentioned. He claimed the club decide not to pay the amount of money Brighton were demanding.

“The moment we couldn’t go through with Cucurella because the club decide we wouldn’t pay this amount of money for this player, I said ‘okay’, think about the idea we had before to loan Sergio,” he said.

The 24-year-old hasn’t made the most convincing start at Chelsea. His performances since joining the Blues show we were right not to pay an inflated price not to even talk of sending Julian Alvarez on loan in the deal.

Chelsea fans will hope Cucurella can improve and end up looking a worthwhile investment, and it may just be that he needs a bit more time to settle.
