‘Possibly the best team in Europe’ – Dortmund chief makes Man City admission after Champions League defeat

Borussia Dortmund chief Sebastien Kehl has hit back at Didi Hamann after he criticised the Bundesliga side for their defeat to Manchester City.

Dortmund were beaten by Manchester City in matchday two of the Champions League this week, with late goals from John Stones and Erling Haaland handing Pep Guardiola’s side all three points.

It had been a relatively close affair until Jude Bellingham put his side in front with a header in the 56th minute. However, two incredible goals from John Stones and Erling Haaland late on turned the game on its head.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for the German side who had been beaten 3-0 in the match prior by RB Leipzig.

However, Kehl was quick to quash any criticism of his side after the match at the Etihad by paying Pep Guardiola’s team a huge compliment.

In an interview with Sky Sports Germany, Kehl said: “We all want to win in the end. I think you still have to make a distinction.

“If you lose 3-0 in Leipzig – and we expressed very strong self-criticism there – or against possibly the best team in Europe against Man City with a narrow 2-1, then you also have to classify it differently.

“I don’t think it is right to criticise after the 2-1.” Dortmund would bounce back from the recent defeats on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Schalke in the Bundesliga.
