Barcelona will continue their pursuit of Bernardo Silva in January after La Liga increased their salary cap by €560million (£490m).
The Portugal international also still has three years left to run on his contract, but there remains uncertainty surrounding his long-term future in Manchester.
Barcelona wanted to sign the four-time Premier League winner from Manchester City in the summer window but failed to agree a deal for the Portuguese ace.
They have now reportedly laid down a marker in their plans for next summer to try acquire the midfielder, and haven’t forgotten about him.
According to Spanish outlet Sport, Barcelona have not forgot about Bernardo Silva, despite missing out on signing him this summer.
The report states that Barcelona would have made a concerted offer to sign the 28-year-old in the summer were it not for their difficulties in enlisting their other new signings due to financial constraints.
Barcelona’s monetary woes were eased during the summer after raising €800m (£700m) by selling various digital assets. Nearly half of Barca Studios – a currently unprofitable digital content company – was among the assets to be flogged by the Catalan club.
Bernardo made it known to Manchester City that he would accept a move to Barcelona if the opportunity was available.
He informed Man City in the summer of 2021 that he wanted to leave for personal reasons, with the playmaker believed to be keen to return to Portugal or move to Spain in order to be closer to his family.
Pep Guardiola and the club would not stand in his way, as it is their mantra to not keep players at the club who do not want to be there.
Bernardo has again been an important player for Man City in the early stages of this season, featuring on eight occasions, contributing two goals and two assists in the process.
The attacker has won four Premier League titles, one FA Cup and four League Cup crowns since arriving in Manchester from Monaco in July 2017.
