Manchester City interested in signing €100m-rated Benfica star

Manchester City are reportedly among the clubs keeping tabs on Benfica sensation star António Silva.

Silva’s rise is a classic story of a player taking advantage of an injury or suspension within the squad.

At the end of August, former Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi was suspended for Benfica’s league outing against Boavista. Putting faith in the 18-year-old, Schmidt threw Silva into the deep end. He would either sink or swim. Thankfully, it was the latter.

He was promoted to the first team this season. Operating in the heart of the defence, he has made 11 appearances in all competitions, which includes four starts in the Champions League.

According to Le10 Sport as relayed by Sport Witness, the Portugal U21 international’s explosion at Benfica has caught the attention of Manchester City, PSG and Real Madrid, with the the Ligue 1 side perfectly positioned for a potential deal, after failing to take him in the summer window.

His deal expires in 2027 and includes a €100m release clause. The report explain that none of Silva’s suitors will pay his release clause, especially since he is yet to complete a full season at the highest level.

Manchester City landed Dias in 2020, and he is a key cog in Pep Guardiola’s backline today. The Spaniard is known to get the best out of his players, and Silva can certainly benefit from his mentoring.

A good passer of the ball, Silva is technically proficient and also a force to be reckoned with in the air. He has everything in his locker to develop into a top-tier centre-back in the years to come. Just 18, he is far from the finished product.

A winner of the UEFA Youth League, the teenage defensive sensation has seamlessly made a name for himself at the senior level. He has taken the opportunity with both hands and can be considered a starter for the Portuguese giants.
