‘Should stay’, ‘Creative midfielders required’ – Man City fans react as Bayern Munich shortlist Gundogan ahead of summer window

Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims Bayern Munich have identified Ilkay Gundogan as a potential summer transfer target.

Since leaving Borussia Dortmund for the Etihad Stadium in 2016, Gundogan has established himself as one of City’s best-ever midfielders.

As well as chipping in with 51 goals and 34 assists from 268 appearances, the Germany international has contributed heavily to four Premier League titles.

However, earlier in 2022, it was suggested that the 32-year-old may be allowed to depart the English giants with his contract due to expire in 2023.

Gundogan instead remained in the North-West, going on to make 11 starts and three substitute outings in the Premier League and Champions League this campaign.

Nevertheless, while the player continues to have less than a year remaining on his existing deal, speculation will persist regarding his long-term future.

According to 90min, Bayern are monitoring the situation ahead of attempting to sign Gundogan on a free transfer.

Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has already insisted that the Bundesliga outfit will not be active during the January window, a clear indication that Bayern are currently happy with their squad.

However, should City not renew the player’s terms before the end of the year, Gundogan will be able to hold discussions with foreign clubs regarding a pre-contract agreement.

The report claims that Gundogan is tempted by the prospect of another stint in Germany, even if it means playing for the rivals of his former club.

The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
