‘I don’t want to see anything like Euro 2020’ – Man City star responds on Harry Kane penalty miss

Kyle Walker “doesn’t want to see anything like the Euros” and has called on England fans to be sympathetic to Harry Kane after his missed penalty cost Gareth Southgate’s side their place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Goals from Aurelien Tchouameni and Olivier Giroud gave France victory, with Kane having initially levelled from the penalty spot.

Kane’s had the opportunity to bring England level for the second time on the night, but blazed his second penalty over the crossbar.

After England’s Euro 2020 final penalty shootout defeat by Italy, the players who missed spot kicks all received racist online abuse, which led to some individuals receiving custodial sentences.

And Walker, 32, has said he wants to see people supporting Kane instead of abusing him, after his costly miss.

He told FS1 in the United States: “I think everybody in the country wanted him to take that penalty.

“I don’t want anything like the Euros. We win together, we lose together. He’s been a fantastic penalty taker for club and country. One penalty doesn’t change that.

“Do I blame him? No, because he has scored so many penalties that have saved me, for club and country.”

Walker added: “We’re not sore losers, we won’t blame anybody else. We will move on.”

Jordan Henderson said that the dressing room already considered the defeat “a missed opportunity”.

“We felt really good. The focus and hunger was good,” he said.

“Unfortunately it wasn’t our night. Give credit to France, they are a good team. But it was there for us to win.”

Roy Keane and Gary Neville also felt sorry for Kane

Speaking on ITV after the game, Keane said:

“For all the disappointments, you’d still ask him to take the next one. He’s a brilliant player, a brilliant professional.

“But it’s a huge setback for him, you’d think he’d hit the target but he fluffed his lines.”

Keane felt defeat was harsh on England.

He said: “It’s brutal. I thought England were outstanding. They covered well and were the better team but you have to give France credit for finding a way to win when they weren’t at their best. That’s what it’s about but it’s really tough on England.”

Gary Neville also felt sorry for Kane.

Neville also felt for Kane after his penalty miss.

He said on ITV: “I’m absolutely gutted for Harry Kane and gutted for the lads. They played really well in the second half.

“You wouldn’t want anyone else to take that penalty. It would have made him England’s greatest-ever goalscorer.

“The heartbreak. They’ve worked so hard through all the qualifying games and have now got to wait four years to do it again.”
