Nedum Onuoha and his ESPN colleagues were left chuckling at Jurgen Klopp when the Liverpool manager wondered whether the ex- Man City, Sunderland and QPR defender had ‘ever played football.’
The Liverpool boss was questioned by former City defender Nedum Onuoha following his side’s draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup third round on Saturday. After being asked a question by Onuoha, a frustrated Klopp began his answer by quipping: “I’m not sure if you’ve ever played football.”
Not only did Onuoha have a 17-year senior career, he made more appearances than Klopp and even picked up a Premier League winners medal with City during the 2011/12 season.
Onuoha has since reacted to the awkward exchange during an appearance as a pundit on ESPN FC as he and the rest of the panel watched back the clip.
Whilst his colleagues were left in stitches by the interview, Onuoha played it off by saying: “If he was in a good mood I probably would have said something back.
“But he wasn’t in a good mood at all. And I thought for my first time interviewing someone so significant in world football, if I bit back it might just turn into some sort of argument.”
It was not the only awkward exchange Onuoha has had as a pundit this week after he was forced to correct Jamie Redknapp on Wednesday after he incorrectly referred to Jill Scott as a centre-back on numerous occasions.
Luckily for Onuoha, it turns out that he had a more distinguished playing career than Klopp when comparing their time as players.

The former England under-21 international made 422 senior club appearances, including 188 in the top flight for City, Queens Park Rangers and Sunderland. He has since transitioned into punditry since hanging up his boots in 2021 following a spell in the MLS.
As for Klopp, he made 347 appearances in Germany for Mainz and Rot-Weiss Frankfurt, never played a top flight match and won his only trophy in 1987 when he lifted the Baden Cup.
