Manchester City starlet Kayky has explained why he joined Bahia on loan for the entirety of the 2023 season in Brazil.
Kayky still has a contract with Manchester City until 2026, and at that age, there’s still time for him to reach his full potential.
The 19-year-old is the youngest ever debutant and youngest Copa Libertadores goal scorer at his first club Fluminense. He played 13 times for our EDS side in 2021/22, scoring six goals and assisting four as we successfully defended our PL2 crown.
He made his senior City debut in our FA Cup win over Swindon Town in January, before making a further appearance for Pep Guardiola’s side as a late substitute in our 4-0 Premier League win over Norwich in February.
The Brazilian winger has spent the first half of the current European campaign with Portuguese side Pacos de Ferreira but his spell was interrupted because once the City Group had a takeover at Bahia, they soon decided to send some players there and the winger was one of them.
Based in Salvador, Kayky’s club will next year play in the Bahia state league as well as Serie A, the top tier of Brazilian domestic football.
Speaking on why he moved back to Brazil at the age of 19, he explained that it was a decision taken with his family.
“These are choices you have to make. When it’s not turning out the way you want it to and you’re young, you have to try to rebuild yourself,” said Kayky (via Bahia Notícias).
“I reached a high level that is football in England and arriving young, having patience to wait. We preferred to return to Brazil to gain confidence and be able to return or follow another path.”
These Kayky’s comments shared on Twitter gathered a number of replies from a wide range of Man City supporters.
@MCFC_Erik: “Love that”
@soulspendulum: “Confidence is key to making it, hope he comes back stronger”
@CashFlows333: “Thought we had the next Neymar ffs.”
@niklarger: “I believe Kayky is on the same level with Garnacho or better. he needs chances..”
@GoodKidManCity: “What he needs is consistent game time. Fluminense stopped using him when he was on his way and went to one of the worst in Portugal. Time to properly develop.”
