Bayern Munich – Manchester City’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final opponents – have sacked head coach Julian Nagelsmann with immediate effect.
Rumours were circulating on Thursday evening that talks were ongoing internally as to whether they should remove Nagelsmann from his post.
Just before the March international break, Bayern lost 2-1 away at Bayer Leverkusen and therefore dropped to second position, a point behind Borussia Dortmund.
Bayern had a difficult start to the season but have been in first place for the majority of the campaign. The club are still in the Champions League and face Manchester City in the quarter-finals.
However, ahead of Manchester City Champions League quarter-final tie, Bayern Munich have made a significant change in the managerial department, with it being widely reported that Julian Nagelsmann will not be the head coach at the time of that fixture.
Fabrizio Romano was first to the information on Thursday night, reporting that Bayern Munich were ‘seriously considering’ the sacking of manager Julian Nagelsmann, with former Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel being the lead candidate to replace his German counterpart.
BILD then confirmed earlier reports, but instead stating that the sacking would come with immediate effect – ultimately confirming that the appointment of Tuchel was imminent itself.
In a final update confirming a significant turn of events at the Allianz Arena, journalist Nathan Gissing then reported that Thomas Tuchel had agreed to become the new Bayern Munich manager, signing a two-and-a-half year contract with the Bundesliga giants.
The news was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
@mxnciteh: “Tuchel is coming to knock us out.”
@koojababy: “Tuchel ending us once again”
@Luke_MCFC: “They’d only sack him ahead of the Dortmund game and our tie if they had a guaranteed upgrade ready. Bad news for us.”
@j_millafilms: “Hope Haaland breaks the Tuchel curse 😭”
@mukhtarmatt: “Let’s go! Pep getting revenge!”
@MCFC_Erik: “Our fanbase acting so scared is so cringe, he has just 2 good seasons in the UCL and we owned him in 21/22”
@Oz96935782: This fan base “Thee of little faith” great news it means they fear us and we never feared Tuchel not now not ever. Our loss was a once off thing where Pep screwed up.”
@Krisz819: “We were better team in the final but the result was painful …. He’s got only 3 weeks short time to implement the tactics but a new coach is always a boost for a team. Anyway it’s not surprise Spurs will look for a new coach, PSG also, Bayern had to move for him asap. ”
