Manchester City star to be awarded new deal months after joining club

Julian Alvarez has agreed an improved contract with Manchester City, according to a new report.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed a eye-catching debut campaign at the Etihad Stadium after a £14 million move from River Plate last summer.

Despite competing for minutes in attack with first-team regular Erling Haaland, Alvarez has already netted 10 times in 32 appearances across all competitions in City colours.

Real Madrid and Barcelona wanted to take advantage of Alvarez’s backup status at Man City to lure him away from the Premier League.

The talk of a potential move away from the Etihad Stadium this summer has been rebuffed for Alvarez, who is expected to be a key figure in Pep Guardiola’s squad next season.

The player has largely been used as a backup for Erling Haaland, but it appears that he has still impressed Guardiola enough to earn a new deal.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the striker has agreed an improved contract with the club, just months after joining City from Argentinian side River Plate.

Romano claims that the 23-year-old will sign the new deal this week, committing his future to City for a further 12 months with his new deal set to run until 2028.

The Argentina international, who played a key role as the South American side won the World Cup in Qatar last year, will also be awarded a pay rise when he signs the new contract.

At present, he is said to be earning around £2.6 million-per-year, but Romano claims that he will see a significant pay rise.

It is also claimed that the player’s representatives received interest from other clubs, but Alvarez was only ever interested in staying put in Manchester.
