Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has provided an update on the future of full-back Joao Cancelo, who continues to struggle at Bayern Munich following a surprise loan switch in January.
Cancelo was a shock departure in January, with Bayern Munich swooping in to take the experienced Portugal international on a loan deal with an option to buy after he fell out of favour with Guardiola and lost his place in the team. While player and club indicated that there could be a reunion, it was not expected.
However, things have not gone to plan for Cancelo at Bayern either. Despite a quick start, and his consistent ability to deliver assists, he has also failed to start recent big games in Munich.
Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann recently criticised Cancelo, saying that he had failed to make a “good impression” in training.
“I told Joao [Cancelo] my point of view after a training session where he didn’t make a good impression, we spoke, he always had a good reaction.”
Bayern expressed doubts over their willingness to pay the agreed asking price in summer of €70m even when they signed him, so after Cancelo has struggled to make the team his chances of staying in the Bundesliga look even less likely. City will wait and see what happens before deciding what to do in summer.
Pep Guardiola has provided an update on Cancelo’s future at the Etihad Stadium beyond this season, ahead of City’s visit to Selhurst Park to play Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
“He’s with Bayern Munich,” said Guardiola. “At the end of the season we will review the cases – payers that are here, not here, loan cases. At the end of the season.
“Joao is a player for Bayern Munich.”
