‘Would be a brilliant signing’, ‘Hopefully we can keep Gundo’ – Man City fans react as Chelsea midfielder keen to join the club this summer

Manchester City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims Mateo Kovacic is keen to join the club this summer, should the opportunity to swap West London for East Manchester arise.

The 29 year-old, who has spent five seasons at Chelsea, looks set to be one of several first-team players to leave Stamford Bridge this summer. Kovacic will only have one year remaining on his contract this summer.

Chelsea’s poor season in 2022/23 means they will be without any European football next season. And it looks as though Kovacic is open to joining a club that can offer that.

He has emerged as a midfield target for Manchester City, with the Sky Blues still waiting to discover Ilkay Gundogan’s plans. The German is out of contract at the end of the current campaign and subject to growing interest from Barcelona.

According to Simon Jones, Kovacic would be “keen” to join the Sky Blues this summer, with the Premier League champions already “plotting” a move for the Croatian.

The 29 year-old is amongst a list of four Chelsea players who are reportedly “primed” for summer departures from Stamford Bridge, while City will asses their squad following the conclusion of the campaign.

Kovacic would definitely not be a bad player to go for if Gundogan did leave the club this summer, as many fans are fearing he will. The 29-year-old is brilliant at driving with the ball, and is very difficult to dispossess.

He’s been really good during his time in England so far, and there’s potential for him to get even better under Guardiola.

The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.

@Lleyto7: “Wouldn’t be a bad signing if he can stay healthy, I think he’d slot into Peps system very well and he’s quality player most days but I still wouldn’t think he’d be 1st on my list to replace Gundo”

@Akolam_Inc: “Personally, I wouldn’t want him come to City as I feel he is not the best option for us. But if he impresses Pep and he’s interested in him, I have no objection as he knows what’s best for his system.”

@mbaalt8: “Every player would be keen on joining us. It doesn’t mean we go and sign mediocre players. Look at Phillips. He’s happy to be here and doesn’t deserve to be here”

@hebitalopez: “I think he is a great player but I ‘d rather keeping Gundogan.”

@a779457: “If it’s £10m-£15m then I can see City entertaining it if Gundo goes. But all the evidence of our transfer movements in recent years shows that we’re not going to pay £30m- £40m for a 29 year old squad player.”

@SilasAmoako17: “Sign him and renew Gundogan’s contract also”

@JakePritchardFC: “As a backup I’ll take him while we also sign a first team midfielder to potentially replace Bernardo(if he leaves that is.)”

@MCFC_LEO: “Would be a brilliant signing would be a good gundo replacement”

@JRSmith89: “Good player. Really like him. Hopefully we can keep Gundo for 2 more years as well, but Kovacic is a baller”
