Fabrizio Romano responds to Liverpool transfer links with Man City star

There is nothing to the transfer rumours linking Liverpool with a possible move for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Since his £45million move from Leeds United last summer, the former Leeds star has endured an injury-plagued start to his career at the Etihad, after failing to start a single game in the Premier League this season.

Phillips has shown quality while playing for Leeds in the past and has also earned himself a regular spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad thanks to his performances.

He has spent a large majority of the season so far recovering from a shoulder injury and playing second fiddle to first-choice Rodri, but he has still not proven himself in the short cameos Pep Guardiola has given him.

The Premier League champions are expected to have undergo a major transformation of their first-team squad this summer. As a result, the 27-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Etihad.

The Daily Star reported earlier this week that Liverpool had made Phillips one of his main targets and are preparing a £35million move for the 27-year-old.

The report adds that Jurgen Klopp has targeted the England international after being priced out of a move for Jude Bellingham.

Writing exclusively in the Daily Briefing, Romano explained that he’s aware of Liverpool looking for midfielders this summer, but that he hasn’t heard anything about the Reds possibly raiding rivals City for the signing of Phillips.

“Despite links with Kalvin Phillips, I don’t have anything on this one honestly at this stage,” Romano said.

“We said many times Liverpool want midfielders and will go for many midfielders, but at the moment I’m not aware of anything concrete on Phillips.”
